Sometimes you bring home more from a trip than just beautiful memories.
Last year, I was in Denmark with my partner. We stayed in a lovely holiday home, nestled in a beautiful wooded area yet close to the beach. I immediately found that combination special. The tranquility of the forest, the fresh air of the coast, and the natural simplicity you feel everywhere there.
Because my partner also had to work that week, I often went out alone with our two poodles. We walked through the forest without any real destination. Just walking, looking, sniffing, and taking in the surroundings.
During those walks, they kept catching my eye: large, sturdy pinecones, much bigger than the pinecones I usually encounter in the Netherlands. They had a beautiful shape, a warm color, and a robust appearance. Not perfectly smooth or neat, but rich in texture and character.
For me, these are precisely the materials that can make a creation special. Not because they are rare or precious, but because they tell a story about where they come from. About the forest, the season, the walk, and the moment you find them.
Of course, it didn't stop at just one pinecone. Before I knew it, I had collected quite a few. My partner was less enthusiastic when it became clear how many I wanted to take home. The car was already well-filled, and suddenly there were bags full of Danish pinecones.
But once home, I immediately remembered why I had brought them. In the studio, the first ideas quickly came to life. The shape, color, and atmosphere of the Danish forest beautifully matched what I had in mind for autumn.
This creation will certainly be part of our autumn collection. Not only because of the material but especially because of the story behind it. A memory of Denmark, of quiet walks through the forest, and of the special tranquility you sometimes want to take home with you.
