Estrelinia: natural aniseed fruit

Natural anise fruit, also known as Estrelinia, is a small dried natural material with a striking character. Its round to slightly oval shape consists of sturdy facets and natural lines, giving each piece an almost graphic pattern.

No two are exactly alike. It is precisely the differences in shape, color, and structure that give the material its natural appearance.

A fruit that is actually a cone

The name anise fruit is somewhat misleading. Estrelinia is not anise and should not be confused with the well-known star-shaped star anise.

The material is commercially associated with the Syrian juniper, Juniperus drupacea. What looks like a small fruit is botanically a cone, where the scales fuse during growth to form a sturdy shape. The tree is native to the eastern Mediterranean.

After drying, the characteristic lines, earthy colors, and small natural differences remain visible.
