Palmcups: Sculptural forms from the Palmyra palm

Sometimes, a natural material is special enough on its own. Palm cups have whimsical, curved shapes, visible fibers, and warm hues ranging from soft beige to deep chestnut brown.

No two are alike. It is precisely these differences that create a rich interplay of shapes, light, and shadow. Up close they are pronounced and organic, yet from a distance, surprisingly serene.

From the Palmyra Palm

Palm cups originate from the Palmyra palm (Borassus flabellifer), a striking palm found in tropical parts of Asia. For generations, the tree has been used there for food, building materials, and various utensils.

Notably, the large palm leaves were also historically used to preserve texts. Religious scriptures, poems, and other knowledge were recorded on dried palm leaves. Some of these manuscripts have been preserved for centuries.

Thus, a material with not only a special shape but also a long history.
