Tillandsia moss: a plant that grows without soil

Tillandsia moss has an almost weightless quality. Its fine grey-green strands loosely intertwine with other natural materials, lending softness, movement, and depth to a creation.

Although its name might suggest otherwise, Tillandsia is not a true moss species. It's an air plant from the bromeliad family, which grows on trees in nature without soil. The plant extracts moisture from the air and uses the tree only for support.

Naturally unique

Tillandsia usneoides, also known as Spanish moss, is native to warm and humid parts of North, Central, and South America. The image of long, grey-green strands hanging from old trees is particularly characteristic of the southern United States.

Its subtle color and irregular structure give the material its special appeal. No two strands are exactly alike.

Why we love working with Tillandsia

For our creations, we primarily use Tillandsia to connect other natural materials. Among shells, for example, it softens hard shapes and fills small gaps without concealing the shells.

The result feels airy and refined. Up close, Tillandsia adds extra detail, while the overall piece remains serene from a distance.

It is precisely this contrast between sturdy materials and the delicate, loose structure that makes Tillandsia so interesting to us.
